Dorothy Hughes

Dorothy Hughes is a legend among New Mexico teachers who have used the Stock Market Game over the years.

Although Dorothy was not here when the SMG first got started at NMSU, I thought it would be interesting to go back to the year it all began.
The year was 1984.

  • January 1: “Ma Bell” was officially broken up into 24 independent units.
  • January 24: The first Apple Macintosh went on sale.
  • February 11: The Space Shuttle Challenger made its first shuttle landing at Kennedy Space Center.
  • July–August: The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles, CA.
  • November 4: Dell Computers was founded with the name: “PC’s Limited”.
  • November 6: In the U.S. Presidential election, Ronald Reagan defeated Walter F. Mondale with 59% of the popular vote.
  • During the year: The Fed Funds rate was as high as 11.77%, the 90-day Treasury bill rate was as high as 10.67% and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note was as high as 13.99%.
  • The unemployment rate began the year at 8.0% and ended the year at 7.3%.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average began the year at 1258.64 and ended the year at 1211.57.
  • Also during 1984: A total of 229 New Mexico public school students took part in The Stock Market Game.

Since then (through the 2006-07 school year), a total of 84,570 New Mexico students have benefited from the lessons learned by playing the Stock Market Game.

And Dorothy Hughes has been a big part of the success of the Stock Market Game, not only in New Mexico and West Texas, but all across the country. She has laid a great foundation for many more years of success for the Stock Market Game.
